The Gray-New Gloucester Patriots Football Program began as an idea when a very small group of parents got together to discuss how to bring football to Gray & New Gloucester, Maine. They questioned MSAD #15 Athletic Director, Town Council members & School Board members for direction as how to proceed to get the prorgram started.
After details were ironed out, the school board voted to authorize the use of the school name (player eligibility/academic requirements to be overseen by the school), permission to register with Campbell Conference, allow the use of overflow practice field for football practice, use of the weight room at the high school, use of restroom facilities during home games, and a location for 7th and 8th grade team to practice and play their games. And so, these parents got the go ahead to proceed and the GNG Patriots football program was formed.
The boosters program was formed in March of 2003; with the intention to fund and run the football program and GNG.
That first football season, the fall of 2003, there weren't enough 7th & 8th graders to form a Middle School team; 6th graders had to be recruited. The High School was allowed a JV team only as they had to play 2 seasons at the JV level before applying for Varsity Status.
In 2007, there were so many Middle School players who registered, MS JV and MS Varsity teams were formed. Now the program is 5 teams strong: HS Varsity, HS JV, MS Varsity, MS JV and a Youth League of 5th & 6th graders. In 2008, The Patriot Grandstand Club Boosters would like to add an additional football team for 3rd & 4th graders, and in 2009 a team for 1st & 2nd graders.
As our program has grown, so too have our players. Every year they return with registration papers in hand, a little taller, a little stronger, and more sure of themselves as student athletes. They've been active in the community by fundraising for the program and getting neighbors and businesses involved. They've watched the Friday night crowd grow from a few parents leaning on a chain link fence, to hundreds of people attending each game. Parents can now sit in brand new bleachers provided by MSAD #15. Thank you!
Below are photos of our football players who have played three years or more with the GNG Patriots Football program, players who have gone off to college to play football or who are serving our country in the United States Military. Some of these players have been with the team since that courageous first year. Thanks guys.
